Smart capability has revolutionized the television industry, transforming a device to watch television into a complete media center for everything from television, movies, and games to on-demand content, and web applications.

If you’re new to the world of smart TVs, you’ll quickly realize how difficult it can be to navigate through all the different features of your new smart tv using the remote. Fortunately, wireless keyboards make it easy to unlock all of the television’s intelligent features.

The world of wireless keyboards and accessories is vast, and it can sometimes be challenging to identify which model is best for you. We’re going to cover all the important criteria to consider when selecting the best wireless keyboard for your needs and take a closer look at the best options available this year.

Different Types of Keyboards

Wireless keyboards fall into three different categories: radio frequency, infrared, and Bluetooth.

Radio Frequency Keyboards

Radio Frequency keyboards rely on a USB dongle which must be plugged into the tv via a USB port to communicate with the television. An RF keyboard may be a good option for you if your television is not Bluetooth enabled.

These types of keyboards only offer a short range of about 6-10 feet, and they typically run on the same frequency level as the other wireless devices in your home, including your router. In some cases, this can cause interference, rendering the keyboard all but useless.

Infrared Keyboards

Infrared keyboards are a bit of a relic, but they may be useful for anyone who doesn’t have a Bluetooth enabled TV and can’t use an RF keyboard because of frequency interference.

These keyboards use a receiver that picks up transmissions of infrared light from the transmitter inside the keyboard. With the advent of Bluetooth enabled devices, these keyboards have become far less popular, and more difficult to find.

Bluetooth Keyboards

The newest and most advanced method of connecting a wireless keyboard to your smart TV is Bluetooth. Bluetooth is a fascinating wireless communication network that allows you to securely connect wireless devices to each other without the risk of interference.

Bluetooth is closely related to radio frequency technology, although it works at a higher frequency that doesn’t interfere with other wireless signals.

Bluetooth devices communicate with one another over one of 79 different frequency channels. Bluetooth is also an extremely safe method of wireless communication because devices will skip channels randomly thousands of times per second as they communicate, which makes them much less susceptible to being intercepted. This process also helps to eliminate interference with other Bluetooth devices.

How to Determine Which Keyboard is Compatible

To determine your best choice for a wireless keyboard, you’ll want to check the owner’s manual, or manufacturer website for your TV, and determine whether it’s Bluetooth enabled. If your TV is enabled, and you’re able to find a Bluetooth keyboard that is compatible with your particular model, it may be your best bet.

If your TV isn’t Bluetooth enabled, don’t worry, you should still be able to use a wireless keyboard. As long as the TV has a USB port, you should be able to connect an RF keyboard.

Chances are if you have a Samsung smart TV, or a TV from a similar quality manufacturer, your television probably has Bluetooth capability, and all you need to do is check for compatibility with the keyboard. Keep in mind that in some cases, a keyboard may not be compatible with your TV. So, you’ll want to confirm that your model TV will work prior to making a purchase.

What to Consider Before Buying

Before you purchase the first compatible keyboard you can find, consider the different features you’d like in a keyboard. These are some of the most popular features available.

Signal Range

Depending on the size of your room, signal range may be an important consideration for you.

Usually, RF keyboards offer a range of about 6-10 feet, while infrared keyboards provide about 12 feet of range. IR keyboards also require a clear line of sight between the receiver and keyboard to function properly. Bluetooth keyboards and devices offer a much broader range of about 30 feet.

As technology advances, even RF keyboards are capable of transmitting over longer distances. Now, some RF models offer signal ranges that rival the signal range of Bluetooth.

Battery Type & Life

Some keyboards require disposable batteries, while others feature a rechargeable battery.

Keyboards that use disposable batteries allow you to quickly replace the dead batteries when they run out, so you can get back to what you were doing. On the other hand, you’ll need to make sure you have batteries on hand for when your keyboard runs out of juice, and batteries can be expensive. Plus, batteries aren’t biodegradable, and they contribute to pollution.

Keyboards with rechargeable batteries are cheaper to own since they don’t require costly batteries that must be replaced. However, if your wireless keyboard dies while you’re using it, you won’t be able to use it while it’s charging.

Regardless of the battery type you choose, you may want to consider a keyboard that has the longest battery life possible. That way, you won’t have to worry about replacing batteries, or losing your keyboard to a charging station.

Ergonomics

Once you realize how useful a wireless keyboard can be as a companion for your smart TV, you may find yourself using it more often than you imagined. You may wish to consider a keyboard with an ergonomic design that’s comfortable for extended periods of use. Ergonomic keyboards can help decrease fatigue and lower your risk for carpal tunnel syndrome.

Size

Keyboards are also available in several different sizes to meet the needs of different users.

Full-Size

Full-size keyboards have the full collection of keys, including the function keys and number pad. These keyboards are usually ideal for computer users. However, the additional keys they provide can be useful for use with a smart TV as well. But, their large size makes them less popular with users looking to connect the keyboard to a smart TV or tablet.

Tenkeyless

Also known as TKL or 80% keyboards, these keyboards are smaller than a full-sized keyboard, and they sacrifice the number pad to achieve their smaller size. These keyboards are a popular option for general use, especially since many keyboard users ignore the number pad altogether.

Compact

Also known as 60% keyboards, this paired back version eliminates both the function keys and number pad. These tiny keyboards are popular for occasional use, and their small size makes them a good companion for travel, as well as with smart TVs and tablets.

Built-In Trackpad

A trackpad or trackball provides the functionality of the mouse inside of your keyboard. This is a feature that can make your keyboard even more versatile, and they’re very popular with smart TV users.

High-end keyboards with trackpads sometimes offer multi-gesture functionality, which allow you to perform several different actions with the swipe of your finger.

How to Connect Keyboard to Samsung TV

Depending on the type of keyboard you’ll choose, you’ll either connect the keyboard via Bluetooth or with a USB dongle.

For RF and infrared keyboards, plug the dongle into the USB port of the television. The firmware for the keyboard should automatically install, allowing you to use the keyboard. Before choosing a keyboard like this, you’ll want to insure it’s compatible with your particular TV.

For Bluetooth connections, you’ll enter the settings menu on your TV, and navigate to the menu that allows you to enable devices on your television. Once the keyboard is turned on, the TV should discover it automatically so that you can pair the TV with the keyboard.
